On June 26 and 30, 2006, Kaohsiung Customs enforcement officers inspected two suspicious transshipment containers destined for Manila, Philippines, which had been carried separately by ships Marclipper and Maersk Kalamata from Tanzania, and temporarily stored at container terminals 76 and 121 in Kaohsiung. After physical examination, the officers found that 1,228 pieces of ivory (unprocessed elephant) tusk weighing 5,217 kilograms were hidden in sisal fibers. The shipment of ivory, violating CITES, was detained and confiscated by the Kaohsiung Customs in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
